In russian part of the forum we have a topic about tactical use of different kind of troops.
Below is a regulations posted by Cavalry Master Ulan & translated by my & Mr. Google Translator:

CAVALRY REGULATIONS

1) Keep the cavalry as long as possible & send them to the battle only when it will bring profit. To place in the ravines and forests - not to expose unnecessarily under fire from artillery. Do not throw it without the intelligence to attack, especially heavy cavalry! Attack infantry on the forehead only if its connected with fight already, it is better to attack from the flank - it will reduce the losses and would not let the infantry get deployed to meet you with fire, but the attack must be immediately stopped if the enemy squad had formed a square!
2) Skirmishing cavalry use only in "biting/bouncing" tactics - constantly harassing the flanks and distracting the opponent from the place where the main attack is being prepared. Not bad to use light infantry with the cavalry, when enemy infantry will be curtailed in the square, take kava away substituting under fire of skirmishers, they can cause a huge damage to the enemy! Enter Ulans from a full gallop and swing immediately to rebuild and re-attack - dont get them involved in melee with a linear infantry and even more with the Guards! No fights with enemy heavy cavalry!!!
3) Heavy cavalry is a powerful striking force, but without infantry support, he is always doomed to a hard losses! But when the battle was nearing an end and troops already scarce - this is the best time of Heavy cava!!! Common seen is when players take all the cavalry and thrown it in the infantry in the early period of a game (interesting that thy have only best cava in the advancing team with no infantry units supporting them) so all kava dies quickly and senselessly. Infantry has big advantage in such situations but without cavalry support it can suffer useless casualties. So good balance is the key to a victory!!!
Dont waste your cavalry & use it only on purpose!

Thanks for Ulan.

Very nice. I will have to remember these tactics in battle.

In the heat of battle I often forget this, and continue to charge my cavalry to their certain death. Razz
